A common New Year’s resolution among healthcare professionals is to begin traveling in the new year. Travel Nurses, Inc. wants to give you the information you need to take the leap of faith and feel confident in your decision.
We spoke with several of our healthcare professionals to get their input about why they decided to travel and what they consider when traveling. The list could go on and on, but we will focus on the most important things to consider.
The first thing to consider is starting early. It can take some time to turn in submission documents and to hear back from facilities. A lot of healthcare professionals start this process about a month before they want to start traveling. But our recruiters are professionals. If you are just now getting started- don’t sweat it! Our recruiters will move as fast as you do. We have seen people contact us and have an offer by the end of the week.
The next thing to consider is your lifestyle. If you are adventurous and want to see the country and be paid to do it, then opening up your options and traveling anywhere could be the right option for you. For nurses, if you live in a compact state and have a compact license, then you would be able to travel to most states without having to apply for state-specific licenses.
If you have a family, friends or commitments that don’t allow you to travel as far, then a local contract or a short-distance travel contract could be right for you. “Before I had a kid, I looked for assignments in places I’d never been to but wanted to go to. It’s the best way to see new places and meet new people while getting paid! Honestly, it’s the best of both worlds. Now that I’ve adopted a child, things have changed a bit. I’m picking assignments closer to home so I can be with him. But I’m still itching to go somewhere,” said Laurie Guerich, CST.
Another aspect travelers consider is weather. A lot of healthcare professionals chose locations based on the weather for that area. We see a lot of healthcare professionals wanting to do assignments in the south during the winter or choose to go to Alaska during the warmer months.
